  • Together Again [first edition of All in the Family] is a fresh, timely exploration of huge cultural and personal shifts in the choices Americans make about living with our multi-generational families. The book is magnificent in its thoroughness—first-rate social analysis, philosophical and psychological depth and sophistication, and warmth and generosity to all generations. Together Again is written by realists, who truly value family and do not see closeness in terms of dependency or dysfunction. The authors and I share a core belief; that generations belong together on a daily basis, and that we all benefit when we live together as complicated, loving and caring tribes.
Mary Pipher, Bestselling Author of Reviving Ophelia
  • A very well-written and researched book. Expertly organized, with real-life stories. The trend of extended families reuniting is here to stay and this book couldn't have arrived at a better time!

  • ...quite successfully highlights the important issues of multigenerational living. Not only does it provide a conceptual framework, but engagingly offers case histories and practical advice. I found the last chapter especially helpful in normalizing common problems that arise in multigenerational living and providing excellent advice and references for dealing with - and yes, heading off - problems that can come from differences in personalities, needs, and preferences. As a counselor, I would recommend this book to clients who are considering multigenerational living, and who seek the comfort, joys, and fun of doing so.

  • The issues of privacy, financial responsibility and household duties and sharing were things I didn't think enough about but this book brought to the fore. By seeing how so many other specific situations dealt with those issues, I was able to tailor my options to our situation. After studying with this book and doing all that was recommended for six months, my mother moved in. It has been 6 months and 3 days since she got here and we've been doing great! When the inevitable differences crop up, I've been able to use what I learned in this book to help resolve it well and to both of our satisfaction.

  • The authors drew on years of research and over a hundred interviews; they present at least a dozen different ways that people can live together successfully. Open the book to any page and you will find people from California to New York telling their stories about creative living arrangements from downtown in a large city to a ranch in rural America. Read about topics such as proximity and privacy, remodeling a home for greater privacy, financial considerations, planning for aging, agreements for living, and successful relationships. The reader of Together Again (first edition of All in the Family) soon realizes that for many people living together with family and friends makes sense.

  • ...a must-read for anyone thrust into the role of caregiver for an infirmed or elderly family member. It explores the positive aspects of cohabitation and practical ways to make it a win-win situation. Never mind how you landed there, Niederhaus and Graham write with wit and humor ways to work it out. I especially appreciated their optimistic tone -the book is a compassionate view of the rewards of multigenerational living, not the drawbacks.

  • Together Again (first edition of All in the Family) presents creative ideas of what family can be and how each generation can learn from the other. This will open your eyes to the reasons why multigenerational households have become the fastest growing family structure in the U.S. The authors skillfully weave anecdotes, dialogues, and hard data to present a very readable account of the pleasures and challenges that are multigenerational families.
Donna Butts, Executive Director, Generations United
  • Together Again (first edition of All in the Family) is a refreshing antidote to those who seek to divide the generations. We know from our research at AARP that all generations in America are closely connected and care deeply about one another. As society ages, more and more people will be looking for alternative living arrangements in order to stay involved in communities and out of nursing homes. Together Again offers readers valuable advice and choices on how to do it.
    Bill Novelli, CEO, AARP
  • Sharon Graham Niederhaus and John Graham are onto something: Multi-generational living offers a solution to some of our most vexing problems, including the eldercare crisis that’s likely to emerge as the baby boomer generation ages and the lack of affordable housing and childcare in many parts of the country. If you’re thinking about refurbishing a basement or building a backyard cottage to accommodate a parent or child, Together Again (first edition of All in the Family) offers more than just practical advice on making it work. It also offers the hope of a better quality of life for those who embrace the comeback of the extended family.
Anne Tergesen, Associate editor, BusinessWeek magazine
  • Together Again (first edition of All in the Family) derives its premise from the inter-connectivity which is central to being human. "Living among strangers" is taken by some to be the very definition of what it means to be old. Niederhaus and Graham deny this threat in their wonderful book which shows how our social convoy extends and enriches life till its furthest reach. Stay together.

  • A Pew Research analysis of Census Bureau data shows that the share of Americans living in multi-generational family households is the highest it has been since the 1950s, having increased significantly in the past five years.
